When St. Augustine was preparing to begin his first pastoral assignment he wrote a commentary on the Sermon on the Mount. In that work he laid the foundation for the whole of Catholic Moral theology, by developing the relationship between the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Beatitudes, and the Petitions of the Our Father.
In his development of this great outline of moral teaching, he presented the Beatitudes in terms of stages in the Christian life. These stages led from humility or poverty in spirit to wisdom and the vision of God.
